The Mapleson Cylinders - Program Notes

- Libretti
- Verdi: ERNANI

Verdi: ERNANI

The Met premiere of Verdi's Ernani took place on January 28, 1903, with the cast of the recordings listed below. The critical response was mixed (Richard Aldrich in the Times spoke of the "flamboyant crudities" of Verdi's early style), and there were only two further performances, with identical casts (February 2 and the matinee of February 21), after which Ernani vanished from the house until the Twenties. Mapleson made two recordings of a famous passage from the scene in Charlemagne's tomb, but no more specific date can be established for these undocumented, virtually identical cylinders. (John Stratton has plausibly suggested that, in view of the identical recording speed, they might even come from the same performance, one an encore of the other.)

In the tomb of Charlemagne at Aix-la-Chapelle. Don Carlo (King Charles of Castile) has overheard conspirators planning to murder him. When cannon are heard announcing his election as Holy Roman Emperor (Charles V), he emerges from the tomb and confronts his enemies. Upon the urgent pleadings of Elvira (who is loved by Ernani, Silva, and Don Carlo himself), the Emperor begins his reign with an act of magnanimity, pardoning them all.
