(1871-1945), German tenor from Holzkirchen,
made his operatic debut in Nuremberg and graduated from small to leading roles
at the Bayreuth Festival. After three performances with the Met in
Philadelphia, he made his New York debut as Siegmund in Walküre on February 12, 1903. The following season, he sang the
title role in the Met's Parsifal performances that
defied Bayreuth's ban on stagings elsewhere; as a result, he was for a time
barred from singing at the festival. During 1902-03, the first of his
seven consecutive Met seasons, Burgstaller sang seven times in opera, and one
outside engagement with the Philadelphia Orchestra. He was paid $12,000.
