The Mapleson Cylinders - Program Notes

- APPENDIX A

APPENDIX A

The Mapleson Cylinders:
An Overview

The accompanying table assembles detailed information about various aspects of the Mapleson recordings, arranged in order of the playing sequence of the present disc edition. The following information is given:

Title: Given briefly, not comprehensively--just enough to identify the recording.

Recording date: For further details of questionable or incomplete dating, see the apposite Program Notes. The letter "m" indicates a matinee performance.

Inventory: Under this rubric are collated various numberings of the cylinders and the recordings on them:

R & H: The numbering assigned to the recordings on the research listening tape at the Rodgers and Hammerstein Archives and in David Hall's inventory in Recorded Sound, 83 (January 1983).

G: The numbering assigned in the Glackens/Bishop inventory to the cylinders received by Seltsam from the Mapleson estate (insofar as it has been possible to match these up with surviving cylinders). A complete publication of the Glackens/Bishop notebook will be found in Recorded Sound, 86 (July 1984), 5-28.

S: The numbering assigned to the cylinders in the inventory prepared by William H. Seltsam when he delivered his collection to the New York Public Library in April 1962. Perhaps because this inventory was prepared in two separate "schedules" (one of recordings that had been reissued by IRCC. one of those that hadn't), it entails duplicate numberings, omissions, and other anomalies.

M: The ad hoc numbering assigned by David Hall to the cylinders discovered at the Mapleson Music Library in 1981. It will be noted that virtually all of these correspond to listings in the "G" column.

NYPL: The numbering assigned to the cylinders in the group acquired by The New York Public Library in 1939; the letter indicates the box, the number a position in the box. Brackets indicate recordings from this group no longer extant except in the form of lacquer copies made at the Library of Congress (LC) in February 1941.

F-A: The similar numbering assigned to the cylinders in the group purchased by The New York Public Library from Mrs. Aïda Favia-Artsay in 1960.

Speed: The cylinders were usually taped at 184 or 180 rpm (see column headed "Taped at:").

When the disc master was prepared, the original transfers were played on a deck with digital readout of playing speed. The difference between the properly-pitched playback speed and 15 ips is the "pitch correction factor" (PCF in the table); when that is applied as a percentage to the original transfer speed, the result is Mapleson's original recording speed. Playing speeds are not given for the recordings transferred from sources other than the original cylinders.

Previous Issues: This column summarizes all known previous publications of Mapleson recordings (scattered unauthorized dubbings in miscellaneous collections may have escaped our notice).

--Numbers without prefixes are IRCC 78 rpm issues: Nos. 154, 163, 168, 183 are 12" discs; the remainder are 10". Nos. 155 and 5002 are single-sided discs; the remainder are two-sided. Nos. 219 and 3034 are coupled with non-Mapleson recordings.

--Numbers with L-prefixes are IRCC LP issues: L-7006 is a 10" disc; the others are 12". L-7004, L-7006, and L-7032 are devoted entirely to Mapleson recordings. L-7015, containing a number of titles from the New York Public Library's original group of cylinders, and L-7028, containing only one Mapleson title, are coupled with non-Mapleson recordings.

--H-5000 is an LP issued by Henry Herrold, containing all the musical selections from the Favia-Artsay group of cylinders; the record also contains non-Mapleson material.

--LPX-12640/2 is a three-LP Hungaroton set, Stars of the Hungarian Opera, Vol. 1 (second, revised edition, 1984); only one Mapleson recording is included, evidently transferred from an IRCC edition (and not trimmed quickly enough--the first bar of the third excerpt from the Tristan duet obtrudes before the cutoff).

--UORC-323 is an LP in the "Unique Opera Records" series, issued by Edward J. Smith, containing several items dubbed from IRCC 78 rpm discs; the record also contains non-Mapleson material.

--VRL5-0365 is a five-LP Australian Victor set, containing the complete Victor recordings of Nellie Melba.

--An asterisk (*) following a number indicates that on that issue the recording carried an attribution different from ours; see Program Notes for further details.
