Antonio Scotti
(1866-1936). Italian baritone from Naples, sang
more performances at the Metropolitan Opera than any other leading singer. His
more than eleven hundred appearances with the company began in November 1899
with tour performances in Chicago. His official debut was in the title role of
Don Giovanni on December 27. 1899. In 1902-03,
when Mapleson recorded him in Ernani, Pagliacci, and
Tosca, Scotti also sang Iago. Amonasro, Germont,
Rigoletto, Almaviva in Nozze di Figaro, Nevers in
Huguenots, Valentin in Faust,
Malatesta in Don Pesquale, and Don Giovanni. He was
paid $11,902 for singing fifty times in opera, three Sunday-evening
concerts, and one outside engagement. Scotti was one of the pillars of the
company for thirty seasons after this one, retiring in 1933. AIDA (Amonasro): Side 5/Band 11
