Act IV: Valentine-Raoul duet excerpt : "Je le vois, et sans cesse" ... "tu ne peux te défendre!"

Lillian Nordica (s), Valentine

Jean De Reszke (t), Raoul

Metropolitan Opera Orchestra--Phillippe Flon

March 11, 1901

[Snake; Glackens 111.]

After temporarily weakening at Valentine's declaration of love, Raoul hears the bell that signals the start of the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre, and is recalled to reality; he must hasten to aid his friends, leaving the grief-stricken Valentine behind.

[original]

RAOUL

[Non più lai, non più amor,
oh rimorso, oh dolor,]
io li vedo, oh terror!
crudelmente perir!
ben saprò, ben saprò seguitarli!
or invan, or invan tu mi parli,
ed io volo a salvarli,
o con loro a morir,
ed io volo a salvarli,
o con loro a morir,
vo con lor a morir,
con lor a morir,
con lor a morir!

VALENTINE
Che? Raoul, il mio dolor
dunque non può toccarti il core,
dunque vuoi, vuoi tradir l'amor tuo,
l'amor, la mia fè,
e fuggire, fuggire da me
per volar, per volare a morir?
Ah, tu lo puoi, ah si! lo puoi,
ma col vedermi a' tuoi piedi,
a' tuoi piedi spirar!

RAOUL
Non più lai, non amore,

VALENTINE
e puoi nel tuo dolore ...

RAOUL
oh rimorso, oh terror!

VALENTINE
obbliar tanto amore, ahimè! ahimè! Simultaneous singing begins
E perchè, e perchè obbliar tanto amore,
ah, fors'è del mio cor men crudel il martir!
il mio duol, il mio duol, ah, tu parli,
non voler, non voler seguitarli!

RAOUL
io li vedo, terrore!
gia perir!, crudelmente perir,
ben sapro, ben sapro seguitarli,
or invan, or invan tu mi parli! Simultaneous singing ends

[translation]

RAOUL

No more songs, no more love,
o grief, o remorse,
I see my friends, oh terror,
cruelly perish!
I know I must follow them!
In vain you plead with me,
for I fly to save them
or to die with them,
for I fly to save them
or to die with them,
I wish to die with them,
to die with them,
to die with them!

VALENTINE
What? Raoul, can my grief
then not touch your heart,
then you would betray your love,
love and my faith,
and flee from me
to hasten to death?
Ah, you could, yes, you could,
but you would see me at your feet,
expiring at your feet!

RAOUL
No more songs, no more love,

VALENTINE
and you could in your grief ...

RAOUL
Oh remorse, oh terror!

VALENTINE
forget so much love, alas, alas! Simultaneous singing begins
And why, why forget so much love,
ah, perhaps the martyrdom of my heart is less cruel!
my grief, my grief, ah, you speak,
do not wish to follow them!

RAOUL
I see them, oh terror!
already dying, cruelly dying,
I know, I know I must follow them,
in vain you plead with me now! Simultaneous singing ends
