Guide to the Research Collections
American literature is collected comprehensively in all genres.1
The rate of growth of the collections administered by the General Research and Humanities Division is indicated by the following tabulation:2
In addition to the holdings of single and collected works of major and minor writers, critical and historical studies, biographical materials, and literary periodicals to be consulted in the Main Reading Room, are the extensive collections including multiple copies and variants of first and important editions in the Berg Collection and the Rare Book Division. Extensive holdings of literary manuscripts are found in the Berg Collection and Manuscripts and Archives Division, including authors' correspondence.
The library does not attempt to acquire translations of all American literary works, but translations and critical editions of major authors in foreign languages are added.
