Guide to the Research Collections
The library maintains a good collection of historical and contemporary works on this subject. The collection of Major George H. Putnam, given by Mrs. Putnam in 1931, contained a publisher's working library on copyright.
Many items in the Manuscripts and Archives Division relate to the subject. The larger part of the Robert Underwood Johnson papers consist of correspondence during the period 1877 to 1935 between Johnson, as an officer of the American Copyright League, and other organizations working in behalf of copyright legislation. Nine boxes of materials in the Richard Rogers Bowker papers represent Bowker's activities in this field, and supplement his personal papers relating to international copyright, now held by the Library of Congress.10
