BOOKPLATES

This strong collection of bookplate examples from the earliest periods to the present is administered by the Prints Division. The holdings are notable for the work of contemporary American and European artists (mainly from the collection given by Herman T. Radin), but also include such early examples as the Buxheim bookplate (in color) and the earliest Swiss bookplate, that of Balthasar Brennwald (1502). The collection is arranged alphabetically by name of owner. Additions to the collection are made on a selective basis; gifts of such material are screened carefully.

The Prints Division also maintains a collection of books, bibliographies, and other materials on the subject of bookplates. The collecting policy, while comprehensive for bibliographies and for works on individual artists, is only selective or representative for periodical and society publications, catalogs, and general and miscellaneous works.
